PDF to EPUB --> grey background

$

Hello to all of you,

I have a problem converting PDF documents to EPUB files. In earlier times it worked quite well, but in recent days Calibre makes a grey background, what makes the EPUB very hard to read. Do you know any solutions hints?

Thank you.

multilanguage conversion issue

Hello,

I recently completed a book that I am about to sell on amazon that has both english and vietnamese in it. Unfortunately when I try to convert it in calibre into the mobi format, the file ends up only showing squares for some of the special vietnamese characters. Is there a way to fix this in calibre? My original document is in word and I believe I did select both english and vietnamese during the conversion process in calibre however, it produces the same error. Any help would be appreciated as it would be a shame to throw out a book that I spent nearly a year on just because I cannot convert it properly into the mobi format.

Blank Pages Inserted when converting from PDF

Happy to move this post if I've put it in the wrong section

Hi All,

I've just started using Calibre and it's very very close to being perfect for what I want. But (theres always a but) I have a problem. My wife has created a kids book where each page is a photoshop image. We batch convert these into a PDF so Page was is Image 1, Page 2 Image 2 etc etc. I've imported this PDF into Calibre and converted into a MOBI file and when I view it in my Kindle App I see that there is a blank page after each image. When I Edit the book in Calibre I can see that it has taken each page of the PDF and converted them to JPG's, which all looks fine but when I View the book within Calibre it looks like there is some Page Break like after each image. Any idea what this is?

If anybody can say how I could make a MOBI file from several JPG images then that would be great as I'm not bothered if I don't have to use a PDF. I was only using PDF because I was originally using KDP.

Incorrectly quoted font name

Hello,

I'm trying to convert to PDF and I keep getting the same error:

KFX conversion error: Incorrectly quoted font name: 'arial

I've tried a bunch of different CSS tweaks to either strip the arial font, replace it, or override it but nothing is fixing the error.

Has anyone else experienced this error before?

Calibre changes HTML markup during convert

Running Calibre 3.13 and when I "Convert books" to EPUB much of my markup changes. Some code I have added to stylesheet.css is removed.

And, it completely removed a file (TableOfContents.html) which seems to be lost forever.

Why is this azw3 ebook's format so bad?

I thought azw3 was supposed to be a nice format for reading on my Kindle Paperwhite. The formatting is awful. The text is in a narrow column on the right side of the screen. This is an ebook I emailed to my Kindle from my computer.

In Calibre, I have the ebook in azw3 and mobi. When I transfer a book to Kindle that I did not buy from Amazon, I know it shows up under Documents, but what format are these ebooks in, mobi, pdf, or epub? I thought all ebooks listed under Documents were supposed to be one of these formats.

Can I convert all of my (non-protected) books to a format that my Mac's Spotlight will recognize so that I can look through my books for a string or name?

What format(s) would be good for this?

Calibre Conversion Removes Original Paragraph Styles

$

When I convert an E-Book to the ePUB format from some other format (Mobi or AZW3, for example), Calibre creates a completely brand new set of paragraph styles, and it also adds a set of Calibre style classes. All of the original paragraph styles are removed from the converted E-Book.

Often, there are so many new Calibre paragraph style codes (Calibre2 through Calibre30, for example), that editing the new ePUB book is nearly impossible for me. I can't figure out which Calibre styles are for Heading1, Heading2, the Table of Contents, and the body text.

Also, I don't understand why there must be Calibre style classes as well as Calibre paragraph styles.

Question: Is there any way to make Calibre just accept the original paragraph style names, leaving those names alone while converting a book to ePUB? This would make life so much easier.

Thanks for your help.

conversion challenge for badly formatted kindle book

i recently borrowed a book via Kindle unlimited and wanted to engineer a temporary epub version to read with working chapters. ( which I would delete once read)

when I got into the converted from mobi code, the whole book appeared as two enormous paragraphs ( one per XHTML file) using <br... for the line breaks throughout.
and also <tt ... spans for all the body text and an outer bracket of <code </code. not sure what the code tags did except make it harder to edit...

a nightmare to fix with regex as the <br dont have matching closing tags

so I forced the book through various format conversions instead, e.g. into and back from docx, AZW hoping that the breaks would get auto transformed into paragraphs - no joy
is there a way to do that that I missed ? i.e. to automate changing all <br line breaks into separate paragraphs, using calibre conversions tools ?

eventually I laboriously fixed it using mutiple manual regex passes, and then located & restyled the chapters

arguably not worth it as the story was not that great anyway, but just wondering about the <br thing in case I encounter it again

[ the book in question in case anyone want to view the sample code - is Gardener Summer by Nova - part of the american Apocalyse series - other books on that series are formatted sensibly ]

Calibre - Vertical Text and Right to Left in Japanese

Hello,

I really love Calibre, but i can't get Japanese Vertical Text and "Right to Left" working for Converting Files.

After importing an Japanese epub or mobi it even shows right in the Viewer, but after converting it (epub -> epub/azw3/mobi, doesn't matter) the Vertical Text and Right to Left are gone.

Is there a way to fix this? I really want to convert my Books to azw3, but that's impossible with Calibre right now :-(

azw4 to epub deformats

Hello,

a 400 page book (no epub format available), bought from Amazon deformats to more than 900 pages, hard to read. The index alone is stretched from 20 pages to 30 pages. For a sample page please see the two appended gifs.

The grey background could be avoided with the elder version 3.23. (hint of another post). I also tried on-line conversion tools (cloudconvert, freefileconvert, epubconverter): one with the grey background, all deformated.

Any help welcome!

Text style changed when converting epub to mobi

I have converted a epub into mobi format. But its style got changed when i viewed in calibre ebool viewer. There are paragraphs in epub which are in itallic form i dont want them to convert in plain text.

Few points:
1. Using calibre:
a) I tried converting epub to azw3, it converted . It looked same on calibre viewer (kf8 was written on title bar along with book title) but when i viewed on my kindle device text was plain.
b) epub->azw3->mobi. Mobi looked fine on calibre ebook viewer but on kindle error was there "unable to open, if you have purchased from amazon delete and download again"

2. I have downloaded the original book(free sample) from kindle sotre, and able to view correct styles.

3. I have also tried 'kindle previewer 3' software for conversion.
a) Epub->mobi gave plain text.
b) epub->azw3->mobi gave some warning 'enhanced typesetting preview not supported for this book since the mobi file has been created by an older version of kindlegen or 3rd party. When transfered .mobi to kindle, there was error=unable to open.

I am not a programmer so was unable to understand any of html coding and ccs related to that epub. Please some one help me in converting this in exact form. I can post the epub here, if somebody is willing to help. Thanks.

.docx --> epub - Heading styles not translating to

Help! I'm converting a docx file to epub. Usually I specify

• Level 1 ToC (Xpath expression): //h:h1
• Level 2 ToC (Xpath expression): //h:div[@id]

and it works great. Suddenly it's not doing that - <h1> and <h2> are no longer marking chapter headings and subheadings. Lulu requires all chapters and subheadings to be in <h2> <h3> format. Did anything change recently?

I have tried numerous times to convert from to PDF to Epub, but I get more or less the same results:

Print one full line of text ->
Print one line about 80% of that size ->
Print newline.
Repeat.

The entire books looks like one giant book poetry couplets.

I have tired fiddling with the settings (not systematically) but it always looks the same.

Any ideas?

Calibre conversion questions

$

Hi!

Sorry for the sort of generic title but I couldn't figure out how to distill my question to be short enough to work for the post title.

So, here's my situation. I have ebooks from different stores, Project Gutenberg, even a few really old MS Reader books, etc and therefore they are in all different formats. Some books are already in multiple formats per title but many are not. I don't want to overwrite any files which already exist in the correct format. So, is there a way to be able to get Calibre (either directly or via plugin) to be able to find and convert every mobi/azw3 book without, for example, an epub version already? And vice versa for epub missing mobi? Even if I could just search for these books first, then convert, rather than all in one step? I just mentioned these two formats to start with as they are the most prevalent and I know PDFs can be much more tricky to convert (and potentially dependent on what device you want to read it on for the most readable outcome). Plus, PDFs are somewhat more ecosystem agnostic than the epub/mobi (meaning that, for example, iOS cannot read mobi directly but can read PDF, and the same for other ebook apps or devices that can read primarily epub or mobi).

Also, I don't know if this is possible or even desirable, necessarily, but would it be possible to save multiple versions of a PDF file converted to mobi or epub that was correctly formatted for a particular device? From what I understand, Calibre can make a PDF converted book much more readable if you tell Calibre which device it's converting for. For instance, if I wanted to save files for viewing on a 9.7" or 10.5" iPad Pro with a second version setup for a 5.5-6" smartphone? I'm thinking if this was the case, it would probably be best organized by having a completely separate "Calibre Library" for each device size. The downside, of course, being that it would take up a lot of extra space. So, looking for an alternative option, can one have Calibre convert for the correct screen size "on the fly" so to speak, when accessing one's library via the internet and downloading to a device that way? I'm guessing no, but any thoughts about a viable alternative options would be brilliant. :)

Lastly, I read that there a "hack", so to speak, that allows any azw or azw3 file (non DRM'd) to be "converted" to mobi without actually doing the conversion with Calibre by simply changing the filename extension from azw/azw3 to mobi. Is this true? And is this something that Calibre can do in a batch job somehow? If so, how would I go about doing this? To be perfectly clear (and to ensure I am in full compliance with the forum rules! :) ), I am NOT asking how to remove the DRM from any files. Just how to batch rename any already DRM free azw or azw3 files to mobi for greater reader flexibility. If this info is in the Calibre help section already, could someone just point me to it (rather than having to re-explain it here)? I'm not sure what search queries I'd even be looking for.

I'm trying not to litter up the forums with multiple questions at the same time by asking these here. But if this is too long to practically get an answer, please let me know and I can split it up. :)

Thanks so much in advance!! Really looking forward to hearing your thoughts.
Rae
