converting from odt and background colour

$

Hello,

I'm trying to convert an odt document to mobi for kindle app android.
Both on kindle app and on the calible ebook viewer, I have issues with background colour when I set the reader (both kindle and calibre) to Sepia.

It looks like most of the text is with white background (wrong as it should be sepia), but some part of it is sepia.

You can see what I mean here:

How to fix it ?
I tried both converting to mobi and reading directly the odt from calibre, same thing

Thank you !

Losing "speaker"

Hello! I'm trying to convert an azw to epub. It's one of Plato's dialogues, so it has "speaker" markers at the beginning of each turn. But they are disappearing in the conversion (see attached).

Any advice appreciated, thanks!

convert kindle to epub, then no TOC

By TOC what I mean is the pop up table of contents you get when you click on its icon at the bottom left of the screen on the Kobo. I don't know where that comes from, I'm guessing it's the toc.ncx file.

Is there some setting I need to use so that I always get that TOC when I use calibre to convert from a mobi or azw3 file to epub?

Book Compression Inside Calibre?

$

As books get bigger and bigger I find myself going to the cloud more and more to compress books so they will squeeze on my wife's kindle. This is tedious because it involves exporting an epub, web compress, reload in calibre, reconvert, etc.

Last I checked this was not available in Calibre via plug-in or otherwise(?)

The web epub compress frequently cuts the size by an order of magnitude which I assume is mostly just adjusting image quality.

Any alternatives?

Conversion problem from ePub to ePub (possibly kepub)

In the last 2-3 weeks I have converted ePub books bought from Kobo to ePub and then downloaded on my Kobo Aura 1, so I presume they were subsequently converted in kepub. I am attaching the details of the file.
There were some strange behaviour of the converter, I assume, where when some Italics text either preceded or followed a non-Italics, the words were joined.
See the attached pictures for as it was originally and converted (the picture with the highlights).
Could it be a new bug of the latest Calibre versions, or just some setting I did not correctly do ?
I have used version 4.18-4.19

PDF to KFX conversion error

Hey!

I was recently gifted a kindle 10th generation by my uncle and I was looking up on how to make the best use of it. The general advice for the file format was to use .mobi but my e-book (in pdf format) looked quite ugly and in many cases, unreadable, after conversion to .mobi format. I used calibre for the conversion. I came to know then of the .kfx format and i installed the kfx plugin and kindle previewer 3. But once i tried to go ahead with the conversion, I'm getting a conversion error. I have attached the conversion log. Please help me out :l

Question about converting epub to .docx or PDF

$

Hi all,

I have an epub file that contains references to original print page numbers in the format <span epub:type="pagebreak" role="doc-pagebreak" id="page591" aria-label="591" title="591" class="calibre"></span> (591 being the example page number from this book). I would like a page break added before each original page, when converting to either .docx or PDF.

I tried to set up an Xpath expression to add a page break before each of these span tags. However, my resulting file doesn't end up with any page breaks inserted. The XPath code I used is //h:span[@epub:type="pagebreak"]

I'm not sure if this is a result of an error I'm making in my XPath code, or if this is not how the pagebreak insertion feature is supposed to work, or if there's another problem I'm not aware of. Please help!

I'll attach a couple pages from the epub I've been working with. Thanks in advance!

Bug in converting PDF to AZW3

There seems to be a bug that converts "ll" (double lower-case L) to " l".

Is there a workaround? Is this a known problem? Did I just do something wrong.

I added the PDF as a book, then used Calibre's convert function to convert the PDF to AZW3. All double lower-case L's were converted to " l".

Apologies if this is not the appropriate place to report bugs. I could find no link for bug reports.

Illegal character conversion failure

I'm having a conversion fail with
Python function terminated unexpectedly: U_INVALID_CHAR_FOUND

This is running on python 2.7. I know that the input book has unicode characters in it (french accented letters).

I'm using Calibre 3.48, as newer ones require a newer OS on my hardware.

EDIT: If I do not embed fonts, it seems to convert just fine.

Hello,

I am importing and converting ebooks to KOBO EPUB format, using specific extensions.
It works perfect except that the spaces before and after words in italics are lost/missing.

Example : We go to thisFrenchshop today.

Did anyone already encounter this problem ?

Thanks,
Mike

epub to pdf justification question

My CSS justifies paragraph tags, but not other tags. This works good in the calibre viewer as an epub, but when I convert to pdf it is all or none, depending on the setting in "Look & Feel / Justification". If I set it to "original" it does not work. The warning box says it might not work in some output formats. Am I missing something? Best regards, Pop

Repeated Conversion

I just don't know how to start a new topic, so I'm putting this here.

I write stories for Smashwords, and convert them using Calibre, so that I can read them slowly and thoroughly, before uploading them. Or even after uploading them. My problem is that I end up with something like twelve versions of a single story, each of which was converted from Word into e-book form.

My question is this: can I save all my conversion parameters once and for all, and just apply them as a single omnibus macro? It is tedious to click on every single option I want to apply--and there are certainly a lot of them. Since I want to have it done the exact same way each time, I dearly wish I can save all my conversion parameters in a file, or something, which I can load as a parameter file!

I did have another question, but I've got so worked-up about this one that I have forgotten.

Oh. I seem to have registered myself as Kay Hemlock Brow, and forgotten the final 'n'. How do I go about changing my data, short of leaving the forum and rejoining it, and battling all the "we already have someone using your mail, so buzz off" sorts of notices?

Cover resizing while converting to ePub

Hi.

I've entered a cover image of 1400 x 1900 pixels (either jpg or .png format) in the Metadata Page of an eBook in Calibre.
After converting that eBook to ePub I noticed that the cover image was blurred.
When going into the source code of the ePub file I saw that the cover.jpeg image was reduced to 873 x 1186 pixels.

How come?

Is there a setting in Calibre were I can state that the cover must not be reduced but keep the original size?

Converting PDF with Identity-H encoding

Most PDF's of Indian languages are using Identity-H a.k.a CID encoding for handling languages with high number of glyphs. While trying to convert these PDF's in calibre, the existing encoding methods (in Look and feel --> Text --> Input encoding) does not list the Identity-H option and the documents are converted to incomprehensible texts. Is there a way to convert the Identity-H encoded characters as is to EPUB or AZW3 formats?

ePub + CSS -> PDF = in xhtml splits

Hi all, trying to make my epub/PDF conversions look a bit nicer and have taken to using a feature I hadn't before. In conversion box, Look & feel > Expand CSS (checked) > Styling > Extra CSS. Note I'm also using search and replace (as I always have).

Once I add the CSS, during the conversion from epub to PDF, Calibre takes the maybe 3 - 5 xhtml pages I had and splits them up, seemingly after my page break code (
Code:

<div style="page-break-before:always;"></div>
)-- typically there could be 10-20 different 'pages' that are split this way.

To make the ePub evergreen we want the epub as manageable as possible... 4 longish xhtml files are better than 50...Any ideas? :smack:

Indent issue with paragraph spacing

$

Hi,

On probably 90% of books I convert in Calibre, I usually encounter an aesthetic problem where the paragraph indents are two large.

I use the 'Look & Feel' tab to fix the text by going to 'Layout', checking the box that says 'Remove spacing between paragraphs' and change the indent size from 1.5em to 0.9em.

This usually works for the indents, but it also removes the spacing between paragraphs and sometimes the spacing is very necessary, especially in history texts where there are quotes from other sources. If I use the above method for these, all the paragraphs become squashed together.

Is there a way to only change the indent size but not remove the spacing? I have tried to change the indent size and then UNCHECKING the box, but that does not make the indents smaller.
Any help gratefully received.

epub to PDF: different output in Calibre 3 vs 4

$

Hi! I highly appreciate this wonderful software, many thanks to the developers!
I have a simple question. I use Calibre regularly to convert epub files to pdf files. I noticed that the pdf output in versions 3 and 4 is quite different. PDF version output is 1.7 in Cal4 and is 1.4 in Cal3. However, the key difference is the font management: in Cal3 the pdf file has the fonts clearly indicated with their names, and the text is easily selected and copied elsewhere. In Cal4 the fonts are not indicated, and when the text is copied&pasted, the words are all chopped, separated with spaces.
When the pdf file is opened with a pdf manager (such as MasterPDF manager), in the files produced with Cal3 the text is easily modified. Not in the Cal4 pdf files: here is impossible to modify the text because each letter is treated as a separate glyph, not as words and lines of text.
This change is not good for me, I had to revert Cal4.20 to Cal3.48. But I'm curious what changed between the two versions of the program, about the conversion to pdf. :chinscratch:
Sorry for my poor English, my native language is Spanish. :)

Kindle DRM only for Calibre ?

Hello,

Calibre says it cannot convert a Kindle file into EPUB because of DRM.

The same file is being converted by some other software without any problems.

Why???

Have Good Source File But In Conversion to PDF Nearly Every Other Word is Split

$

Hi,

I am converting a file to PDF. HAve used the same source for these files many times.

Never had this anomaly before.

Once the file arrives in PDF format, it LOOKS great!

But, in copying and pasting text from it it seems that the actual text has split many of the words.

So that, if you copy and paste the words:

with security was demoralizing

You get...

with se curity was demor aliz ing

This does not appear in te PDF itself. All the words look perfect in the PDF.

I've tried running the conversion with: Smarten Punctuation an Unsmarten Punctuation on.

It is a pure text-to-text conversion. Not from a scanned image.

What do you think is happening?

Sincerely,

Blaine
