Call to convert html book to epub/mobi

$

Hello,

First of all, apologies if this post doesn't belong - I couldn't ID a header under which my post would be better suited!

A HTML dictionary of Chinese Buddist Terms is available online here:
https://bit.ly/33LnocO

I confirm the HTML book to be in the public domain (check the preface).

I'm interested in converting it to EPUB and will go ahead with that, but my grasp of ebook creation is very basic indeed.

So, if anyone is interested, do please go ahead with your own project of converting the dictionary.

If you are interested and your mastery of ebook creation is top notch, I would love for you to keep me posted.

Have a great day

Guy

EPUB to PDF background rectangle

Hi, when converting from EPUB to PDF I get white background rectangles on each page, that cover the area behind the text (inner area of the page without margins). Is there a way to disable this from happening?

I'm running Calibre 5.2.0 on MacOS.

Text wrapping around pictures: yes on epub, no on mobi?

I have an HTML file with pictures being wrapped around with text, and Calibre successfully converted it into epub that retained the text-wrapping (screenshot of Google Play Books Android app). I converted the same HTML file to mobi, but the text-wrapping was not retained (screenshot of Kindle Android app). Notice the font size of the picture caption also differs in the two. The epub retains the correct font size from the HTML and the mobi doesn't. Am I missing something or is such text-wrapping not supported in mobi? The HTML file is from this Gutenberg book named "Trilby" (where the classic character "Svengali" came from). Only the HTML version of the book has the text-wrapping I mentioned. The epub and mobi versions do not.

Microsoft Word to EPUB conversion letter list problem or mismatch

I couldn't find a way to get around it. I am not too sure it is a setting problem. Kindle create does the same thing. In a long list from "a" to "z", after the conversion does not match the list from Word, as an example

a. apple
b. test 1
c. test 2

...

z. orange

in Word after "z", the next follow is "aa", "bb", "cc", however in Calibre is "ab", "ac" and so forth Kindle create tool does the same thing. Is there a way to get around this. I couldn't find a way to fix it.

Microsoft word to EPUB conversion Index link issue

I really like the feature where the index can link to specific document section, however it looks during the conversion process, the items in the index are not properly identify. I think this may be a setting issuer or but, which I don't know how to fix manually.

The way index works in Word, example

A
apple, 3
all, 5
aruba, 7

so basically what Calibre does during the conversion, it removes the comma and the page number so user can simply click on specific item and link to the document section which is nice. However, the conversion does not work 100%. The links work fine, not the identification all the time. For example in my document, I have some tags

like my index in word

A
apple PL-2, 3
all PL-5, 5
aruba PL-10, 7

After the conversion in Calibre, I should have something like this, because everything that is removed is the comma and the number after it which is the page number

A
apple PL-2
all PL-5
aruba PL-10

However, after the conversion some of them look goods while some other don't. For example, in some parts of the document, it works fine not for some other parts

for example, my output look like

A
apple PL-2
all PL-
PL-10

I wonder is there a way to change the setting to even preventing from remove the page number, just leave the index the way it is and simply link to specific section.

Nice feature I really like, but does not work for me

Any fix or change setting?

I'm new to Calibre and not sure if this is the right forum but here are my questions: Calibre is converting the Word documents on my Desktop to books. How do I stop that from happening? How do I convert them back to Word documents?

EPUB>PDF conversion adds unwanted margins

Hi
When I try to convert individually ad epub to PDF the result contains unwanted additional white margins (only right and at the bottom).
In "Page settings", input, default profile, I 've set all four margins to 0 pt.
In "Output PDF", I've set the two margins to 0 pt.
When I open the PDF I see white margins at the right and at the bottom of each page (excluding the cover page that has no margins).
How can I do to avoid these added margins to appear?

Missing letters

Hi there. Can anyone help me? I have a kindle paperwhite 3 device. I convert a lot of books with the "Caliber" program. I always update and convert books a few months badly. I don't know what setting I should choose. I usually convert a pdf file to a mobi file. The mistake is that in the text if these two letters are next to each other "fi", it will not print. Does anyone know what I should set? I read in Hungarian. My English is pretty weak. Please help. Thanks in advance.

issue converting from azw3 to mobi (ccs and font issue)

Hi, I am new to Calibre and I have kindle 4.

Recently, my son is reading Dragon Masters books in awz3 file. The issue is that the front size is small and not changeable.

So then I have found a .mobi of the same book online, and It shows the original page (image + text on one page in first picture), then just plain text in the following page (the front size can be increase in second picture) - screenshots in attachments.

Therefore, when I tried to use Calibre and tried to achieve the same result, but Calibre didn't generate the following text page for me. (I have enabled heuristic processing, but didn't do the trick)

I am not sure how this can be done at all and plz plz plz tell me how to get it done if anyone knows how. :help:

Probably bug - Thin lines vanishing

$

I have an epub I'm converting to pdf. The Calibre converter's doing okay, really, but I decided for best results to create a customised epub and convert that. The document uses 'thin' 'medium' and 'thick' lines which are 0.25mm, 0.5mm and 1.0mm - those were round numbers chosen to make some CSS box sizes neater.

(css sample:

div.large_cap {
background-color: #FFFFFF;
border: 0.25mm solid #222222;
color: #5588FF;
line-height: 12.5mm;
text-align: center }

i.e. a decorative box round a drop cap)

But the 0.25mm lines vanish entirely from the PDF output, although they display fine in Calibre when I view the epub, and also when I view the relevant chapter html file in a web browser. So I don't think they should disappear in the pdf. When you print at 360 dpi, 0.25mm is would be about 3 dots wide so they should print OK except they're getting nobbled in transit. So I think there's a rounding error in Calibre. This is because 'one pixel' is 1/96th of an inch (ish; I know some caveats may apply), and that's 0.26mm. Seems I unknowingly chose a round number juuuust below that, so no thin lines for me!

I'd be glad to log it as a bug - can anyone confirm it?

Is there a config setting I've missed where I can set the minimum line thickness to some lower value?

Chapter detection for azw3 to

$

Hi folks,

I've got a number of books from Amazon recently where each chapter has two heading tags which results in the default calibre conversion splitting the first part of a new chapter title into its own page and the second part on the next page with the rest of the chapter text. This is an example of the html:

Code:

    <div class="heading heading-with-title heading-without-image" id="chapter-1-heading" aid="3Q282">
      <div class="heading-contents" aid="3Q283">
        <div class="title-subtitle-block title-block-with-element-number" aid="3Q284">
          <div class="element-number-block" aid="3Q285">
            <h2 class="element-number" aid="3Q286">1</h2>
          </div>
          <div class="title-block" aid="3Q287">
            <h1 class="title" aid="3Q288">Descent</h1>
          </div>
        </div>
      </div>
    </div>

I know I can tinker with the "Detect chapters" XPath stuff in the structure detection options in the coversion dialogs, but I was wondering if the default XPath could be made smarter somehow to pick these cases up. I don't XPath enough to know if this is possible.

The attached zip files contains an example from "Colony Mars One" extracted with mobiunpack and reduced to just a simple example that shows the problem when run with ebook-convert.exe .

How To Use Alt Text Instead of Images?

$

I am dealing with an epub which is full of junk images (eg. Chapter titles, section breaks etc). Looking at the code using calibre code editor, I can see alt texts have been defined for every image.

For the love of God, how can I get rid of images in an epub and just use the alt texts instead. I prefer to have absolutely plain text in my epub, unless the images are essential or at least high quality (maps, illustration etc). I can not stand superfluous decorative images.

So how do I go about doing it? Any method will do as long as the end result is achieved (epub to epub conversion, epub to docx conversion, modifying epub etc).

Any help please. :(

realigning Calibre with DeDRM

Hello.
Let's face it: Calibre plays 100% legal (although I am 100% certain that Amazon, Adobe and the like would really, really appreciate its disappearance from the surface of the earth), but the DeDRM plugin that can be obtained on GitHub and through various channels DOES provide a very, very useful tool for those of us (many I'm sure) who can't stand DRMs. I for one, when I buy a Kindle book on Amazon, rush to Calibre, make it fully convertible, DeDRM it and convert it to both EPub and Mobi, then I transfer the Mobi version to any Kindle I wish and plainly delete the AZW/KFX file altogether. So yes, I paid for the book, but no, I will not have its use limited to such or such platform or device because Jeff Bezos (or somebody else) says so (and don't ask me too hard whether I don't sometimes then, especially for books by now deceased authors, upload the EPub version to some, say, Russian site where others may stumble upon it and feel free to use it, that's something different).
In the light of this, I now have to use quite a few contorsions in order to keep this running : not only use no later version of Kindle for PC than 1.24 (people used to say 1.17 because they said 1.19 already put an end to anything being done, but with both KFX Input and DeDRM plugins, it is - mostly - manageable with 1.24), BUT I ALSO have to keep away from any Calibre update version 5.0 or later, because DeDRM just won't work after version 4.23.
And frankly, I think this is going in the wrong direction. I have no idea what technical obstacles are in the way, but I am absolutely certain that leaving open at least the possibility to run the latest operational version of DeDRM with the latest operational version of Calibre would be a very good move.

format image to be full page (ignore margins - bleed?)

Newb here - sorry if in wrong place, asking wrong question.

Want to convert docx original for print and later ebook. Tried Calibre conversion docx>pdf and it seemed to work fine (though I have not submitted to any printers yet so maybe don't really know - but it looks ok to me).

Issue is I have one 300dpi image with several lines of text in it that I want to be on one page and legible and maintain aspect ratio. Would like to do a 6x9 book and I think if i could get the image (and only the image) to "bleed' to [near] the edge of the page it would work. The image is currently jpg @ 1.67MB so not sure if I can attach it here.

Can this be done in Calibre?

Thanks for any help or suggestions on alternative approaches.

Calibre log on ubuntu

I get an error when running this command:
File "/usr/lib/python3.7/subprocess.py", line 512, in run

This error has never occurred before and happens to only one book. Is there a log file for ebook-convert on ubuntu? I have searched the file system without finding one.

I have also tried the conversion on calibre desktop gui, and on windows the conversion runs fine.

Bulk conversion of CBR to PDF doesn't work right since "Comic Input" is missing

$

The only way I've found to convert CBR files to PDF the way I want--with no image processing, with the PDF output pages just the exact size of the input images, color, etc etc is:

Convert Individually

Comic Input: Diable comic processing, disable conversion of images to black. & white

PDF output: Use the paper size set in output profile

But, I can't do this except one at a time, since there is no "Comic input" option when I choose bulk convert.

My goal is to transform a folder of CBR children's books to PDF, where the resulting PDF is visually indistinguishable from the CBR, not monkeyed with. I have found that when this works right the output PDF is about the same file size as the input CBR. Simply leaving the files as CBR is not an option.

If anyone has any advice on how to accomplish this conversion in bulk, I'd love to hear it.

Calibre won't open one particular Kindle Unlimited purchase.

Hello

Today my Kindle for PC app auto updated to the latest version (even though the auto update box is unchecked). Seems this happened to many people but that's not my problem as I just reinstalled K4PC v.1.17 and reregistered it.

However, one of the Kindle Unlimited books I downloaded, when imported into Calibre, won't open in the viewer saying it's DRM protected (which shouldn't be the case as I have Kindle Unlimited on my account). I'm using Calibre 64bit on Windows10. And the other two KU books I downloaded after, DO open without any problem.

The KU book which won't open is "Ruth Bader Ginsburg: The Biography by University Press".

Anyone have any ideas why it won't open and how to fix? I've already tried deleting/removing/returning ... ie getting it off my reinstalled K4PC v1.17 app/device/deleted from my Amazon content and redownloaded it to the K4PC v1.17. There's no problem opening it in the app and importing the file into Calibre but still Calibre's viewer won't open it. When I go to Edit Data on the book, I can see it's a AZW file.

Before, whilst it was the latest Kindle app version, it actually created its own folder named as the B00 number and within that it the book file sad MD beside it. Whereas, now the Kindle app is v1.17 again, as usual it doesn't create its own B00 folder and just put the book file (showing as Kindle Content) in the My Kindle Content folder, with the same named APX file ... same as it always has.

Is it anything to do with it firstly opening in the upgraded Kindle app?

Anyone got any ideas on why Calibre won't open it in the reader and how to fix it please?

Any suggestions greatly appreciated. Thanks.

How to view math equations on Kindle

$

I have an epub that contains a lot of mathematical equations. I have tried converting it to mobi and azw3 formats but the formatting gets messed up when viewing on a Kindle. The equations are in MathML format, which does not render correctly on my Kindle. I have other eBooks that replace the markup notation with images like .svg and they work perfectly.

Is there any way to convert this to a Kindle readable format and convert the MathML sections to images?

I know there are ways to do the two separately but that would mean manually replacing hundreds of markup tags with images. It would be great if there was a simpler answer. Thanks
